Swiftboat Veterans moneyman Harold Simmons has emerged as the biggest donor to a political committee linked to Karl Rove that is targeting top Democrats. Rove is a key adviser to American Crossroads, which is airing TV spots against Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democrats. Simmons and Rove have teamed up before. In the 2004 presidential race, Simmons was a major contributor to the devastatingly successful Swiftboat Veterans attack on John Kerry. Kerry was challenging Bush and Rove was Bush's top adviser.
The latest reports show that Simmons gave $1 million last month to American Crossroads through a Louisiana corporation he owns, Dixie Rice. The month before, Simmons gave the group another $1 million through another Louisiana company. American Crossroads is the brainchild of Rove and former national Republican Chairman Ed Gillespie. The group operates independently of candidates to deliver hard-ball ads aimed at Democrats.
