gp republican 1006 - GOP Heavy Hitters Get TogetherThe 2010 election season will feature some heavy spending by independent Republican groups, and, National Journal's Peter Stone reports, the major players involved got together yesterday at the home of Karl Rove in Northwest Washington, DC.

It was a luncheon briefing that included legal information on how independent groups are allowed to coordinate. In attendance were former RNC Chairman Ed Gillespie, who, along with Rove, is helping out with a new "527" soft-money group called American Crossroads; former Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) and Fred Malek, who are heading up a similar 501(c)3 and (c)4 group called American Action Network; and U.S. Chamber of Commerce political director Bill Miller.

All told, those three groups will spend tens (if not hundreds) of millions of dollars to air ads and support voter-contact operations for Republican candidates and issues this year.
