Satanist Sex Offender Jailed

"Satanist Sex Offender Jailed"
5 July 2007

A CONVICTED sex offender and self-proclaimed satanist who failed to register with police an address in West Yorkshire where he was staying after his release from prison has been jailed for a total of four years.

Gary Dover Afflick, 41, was sentenced to 14 years behind bars at Bristol Crown Court in 1997 for a string of offences including supplying drugs, kidnap, blackmail and indecent assault.

That court heard he abused vulnerable youngsters to whom he gave drugs and lectured about satanism. After other sex offences came to light he was given a six-year concurrent term in 1997 at Winchester Crown Court.

On February 28 this year he was released from Garth Prison in Preston, believed to be one of 16 prisoners released early as a result of a Law Lords ruling that they had been sent back inside illegally after earlier breaches of their terms of parole because new rules did not apply to them.

Nigel Wray, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court yesterday that when Afflick left prison he travelled to Leeds and told an officer at Millgarth police station he was of no fixed address.

He was directed to St George's Crypt but on March 7 police went to a house in Inglewood Drive, Leeds, and found he had been staying there. The house was near a primary school.

Occupant Andrew Moss said Afflick was at a nearby shop and when he was found there he was arrested for failing to give information needed for the sex offenders register.

Mr Wray said inquiries revealed Afflick and Mr Moss had met in prison, had corresponded and remained friends. Afflick had stayed at the address for about three nights and said he had never stayed at the crypt. He said he had also slept in an empty flat on previous nights and accepted police would not have known where he was if they wanted to contact him but denied "any ulterior or sinister motive to that".

Murray Schiffeldrin, for Afflick, said his client accepted the inevitable prison sentence but wanted it stressed that he had told police he was in Leeds and had not simply disappeared or gone underground on his release.

"He was confused when he should register his new address with police."

Afflick, who admitted failing to comply with notification requirements, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail to run consecutive to 18 months imposed from his original prison sentence.

Judge Ian Dobkin accepted Afflick was not hiding from police and was living openly.
