Rumsfeld concocted the weapons of mass destruction lie to justify war in Iraq, leading to entrenchment, an armed insurrection that left hundreds of thousands dead, and veterans who returned home only to take their own lives to stanch unbearable memories of war. When questioned about his actions, he quipped, "stuff happens."
