Monsanto Pesticides are Making Argentinian Kids Sick

This is a modified py-6 that occupies the entire horizontal space of its parent.

October 31, 2013

Farmers in Argentina have been using Monsanto‘s genetically engineered soybean seeds and pesticides since the 1990s. They’ve increased crop yields so much that Argentina is now the third largest soy producer in the world and the country’s farmers are convinced that GMOs and pesticides like Monsanto’s glyphosate are the key to their economic stability and to future food security.

But high crop yields have come at a price. A report from the Associated Press has found that Monsanto’s pesticides, and glyphosate in particular, are causing birth defects and cancer among Argentinians.

The Gatica family, who live only fifty meters away from fields planted with genetically modified soy, has had one young child fall mysteriously ill and a baby die after three days from kidney failure. After this tragedy, Sofía Gatica started asking other residents of Ituzaingó, a Córdoba suburb, if they also had unexplained health problems. So many did that she and other women formed a group, the Mothers of Ituzaingó, and demanded that the government investigate.

The government did so in 2002 and learned that 80 percent of children in Gatica’s neighborhood had agrotoxins in their blood and that the area’s water was polluted. At the same time, Andrés Carrasco, a doctor at the University of Buenos Aires, made a link between glyphosate and birth deformities, finding that “in most cases, the fetus dies before birth because of its deformities.”

The Associated Press’s report suggests that similar cases of birth deformities and illness are now being found throughout Argentina, as revealed from a review of many sources: hospital birth records, court records, peer-reviewed studies, continuing epidemiological surveys, pesticide industry and government data, and a comprehensive audit of agrochemical use in 2008-11 put together by Argentina’s bipartisan Auditor General’s Office.

Doctors interviewed by the Associated Press also say that their caseloads suggest “an apparent correlation between the arrival of intensive industrial agriculture and rising rates of cancer and birth defects in rural communities.” With cancer rates in Santa Fe reportedly two times higher than the national average and birth defects having increased fourfold in Chaco, doctors are calling for longer-time studies about agrochemical exposure.

Even more, farmers are using agrochemicals improperly, by failing to don protective gear and using the discarded pesticide containers to store water and other materials, according to the Associated Press.

Argentinians Environmentalists Take Up Fight Against Monsanto

Gatica’s efforts to protest about the use of Monsanto products have not been welcomed. She has been harassed by other people (once by a woman who “insulted her” for the 40 minutes of her trip to work) and says she’s received threatening phone calls. One time she was told that “I had three children and that I would end up with two.”

With the support of other environmental activists, Gatica is carrying on the fight for pesticide-free borders to ensure that agrotoxins are not sprayed near people. These efforts are meeting with success. At the start of October, Monsanto stopped work on a corn processing plant after protests by environmentalists disrupted the delivery of work supplies. Last year, a soy farmer and the pilot of a fumigation plane were found guilty of spraying harmful herbicides near residential areas.

Enrique Viale, the president of the Argentine Association of Environmentalist Lawyerssays that “the verdict is the product of the struggle by citizens, by women like Sofía Gatica, by the Mothers of Ituzaingó. It’s helpful and valuable as a precedent, but it’s not widespread yet.”

About ten percent of the Argentinian government’s budget comes from soy and “many farmers remain convinced” that using Monsanto products is necessary to continue their fields’ productivity, Deustche Welle says.

Even as evidence about the dangers to people’s health grows, getting farmers not to use glyphosate and GMOs is not going to be an easy task. But clearly, Gatica and the Mothers of Ituzaingó are up to the fight.

His fate had baffled Nazi hunters for 68 years

Berlin/AFP — The head of Hitler’s Gestapo secret police and one of the organisers of the Holocaust, Heinrich Mueller, was buried in a Jewish cemetery in Berlin in 1945, a German newspaper reported Thursday.

For 68 years, the fate of “Gestapo-Mueller” has been unclear but Bild, based on documents found by a historian, said he died at the end of the war and was buried in a common grave in a Jewish cemetery in central Berlin.

“Mueller didn’t survive the end of the war,” the mass circulation newspaper quoted Johannes Tuchel, head of the Memorial to the German Resistance, as saying.

“His body was interred in 1945 in the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Mitte in a mass grave,” he said.

Mueller was long rumoured to have survived World War II. Bild quoted a German BND foreign intelligence file stating that Mueller was in Carlsbad in the former Czechoslovakia in summer 1949.

But Tuchel told Bild that the secret services were wrong.

“Mueller’s body was already found in August 1945 in a provisional grave near the former Reich’s aviation ministry by a burial commando,” he told Bild.

His body was dressed in a general’s uniform, Tuchel said. “In the inner left breast pocket was, among other things, his service certificate with a photo,” he went on.

Bild also printed a document it said was from the registrar’s office in Berlin-Mitte showing Mueller was buried in the district’s Jewish cemetery.

The leader of Germany’s Jewish community, Dieter Graumann, reacted angrily.

“That one of the most brutal Nazi sadists is buried in a Jewish cemetery is a distasteful monstrosity. The memory of the victims is being treated here with contempt,” he told Bild.

Mueller attended the Wannsee Conference at a villa on the outskirts of Berlin in January 1942 at which senior Nazis plotted the “Final Solution”, a plan to exterminate all Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe.

But CBS News coverage offers this caveat:

… The Simon Wiesenthal Center’s top Nazi hunter, Efraim Zuroff, sounded a note of caution, saying only DNA evidence could prove Mueller was buried in Berlin.

The Nazis who wanted to escape very often took measures to create false documents faking their death,” he said in a telephone interview from London. “I would be very wary of reports like that without forensic evidence.”

He cited the case of Aribert Heim, a Mauthausen concentration camp doctor who allegedly died in Cairo in 1992.

“Heim was buried, according to his son, in a mass grave for poor people in Cairo, and it’s a perfect story because it’s impossible to verify,” Zuroff said.

It’s not yet known whether any efforts will be made to find Mueller’s bones in Berlin.

According to the Berlin Jewish Community’s website, the cemetery included the grave of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and was destroyed by the SS in 1943, when they built trenches through the area. At war’s end, it was used to bury bombing victims and other war casualties that littered the German capital. …

Republicans are demanding cuts in Social Security and Medicare if Democrats want to change the terms of the “sequester.” … So is the media giving Americans the information they need in order to make informed decisions?

Yesterday The Hill reported, in “House GOP says sequester is leverage in next budget battle,” that House Budget Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan is pushing for cuts in Social Security and Medicare:

In a meeting with House conservatives, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), told rank-and-file lawmakers that, as the party’s chief budget negotiator, he would push instead [of killing Obamacare] for long-term reforms to entitlement programs in exchange for changes to sequestration spending cuts that Democrats are expected to demand.

[. . .] Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) said that during the GOP meeting, Ryan pointed to sequestration as the party’s leverage with Democrats and said the Republican negotiators would not accept revenue increases in exchange.

“We’re going to try to push for some substantial reforms on entitlement spending and our backstop is sequestration,” Salmon said in describing Ryan’s remarks.

Most American’s don’t read The Hill. And most Americans don’t know that “long-term reforms” to “entitlement spending” specifically means cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

Reuters is pretty much the only outlet carrying this news, in “U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan wants narrower focus for new budget talks,”

Ryan, who will lead Republicans on the panel, said there was a better chance of finding common ground with Democrats on “smarter” spending cuts to replace the across-the-board reductions to discretionary spending. He said those include reforms to “entitlements,” which include the Medicare and Social Security programs for the elderly, Medicaid healthcare for the poor and some farm subsidy programs.

0060imagesThat’s about it. So let’s go back to a few weeks before The Hill‘s report, and see if there have been reports in the major media that spell out for the public that, having dropped their demand to get rid of Obamacare, Republicans are demanding cuts in Social Security and Medicare.

On October 8 Ryan laid it out in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal,Paul Ryan: Here’s How We Can End This Stalemate,” in which he called for cuts in Medicare and Social Security,

To break the deadlock, both sides should agree to common-sense reforms of the country’s entitlement programs and tax code.

… We could provide relief from the discretionary spending levels in the Budget Control Act in exchange for structural reforms to entitlement programs.

… mandatory spending—which mostly consists of funding for Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security—will grow by $1.6 trillion, or roughly 79%. The 2011 Budget Control Act largely ignored entitlement spending. But that is the nation’s biggest challenge.

(Note that later in this op-ed he explains that “reform” of the tax code means “lower the rates.”)

Here is NBC News, October 17, actually saying it, in “Fiscal deal opens door to big tax and entitlement changes,”

The deal struck Wednesday in Washington could make it easier for lawmakers to make big changes to tax policy, spending and entitlement programs.

… This blueprint could be the vehicle for major policy changes intended to reduce budget deficits and debt. These might include tax increases and curbs in the entitlement programs such as Medicare.

I can’t find much else. Can you? Do people you talk to understand that Republicans are demanding cuts in Social Security and Medicare? How do you think people would react if they understood this?

To many in the voting public the word “entitlements” does not translate to “Social Security and Medicare.” Ryan and the Republicans understand this. This is why they talk about “reforming” something that is not clearly understood as Social Security and Medicare.

So again, have any major news outlets explained to the public, using words that the public understands, that the Republican position in the current budget negotiations is a demand to cut Social Security and Medicare?
